Hippocrates, the Greek/Roman father of medicine, is sculptured in what is believed to be world's largest single piece of carved green tourmaline. What makes the figure even more striking is that when a light is placed at its back, the figure literally glows!
What a terrific gift for a doctor or surgeon.
The finished carving weighing 4,060 carats, was carved from a piece of tourmaline rough which weighed 12,175 carats. The artist cleverly left a half inch of the original gemstone complete with straiations at the base which, in turn, was mounted on an obsidian base lined with 44 grams of 18k gold.
This figure was carved in Kirschweiler, West Germany, under the expert direction of Manfred Wild.
