Contributors (JewelSiam Feb-Mar 1994 p17)

Ken Scarratt is the director of laboratory services, research and education at the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS) in Bangkok. His long experience in gemology includes former positions as chief executive of the Gemological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain and director of the gemological Institute of America’s Gem Trade Laboratory in New York. In this issue of JewelSiam he begins a regular series called “Lab Report,” which will draw on the advanced technology of AIGS and its team of gemologists to give readers the latest, most in depth scientific data available on the Bangkok gem trade.

U Tin Hlaing is a professor of geology at Taung Gyi University in Myanmar (Burma), and is a specialist in gemology and mineralogy. He received his fellowship diploma from the Gemological Association of Great Britain in 1969 through a UNESCO program at Rangoon University. His story “A Trip to Mong Hsu,” is based on two visits he has made to the mining site of Mong Hsu rubies during the past two years. His previous articles on Mong Hsu rubies have appeared in Australian Gemologist.

Tony Laughter, pictured here relaxing on Burma’s Inle Lake, is the manager of the School of Gemological Sciences in Bangkok and a contributing editor of JewelSiam. His article, “Kashan Makes a Comeback,” provides practical advice on sorting synthetic from natural ruby. Also in this issue, he contributed technical advice, photographs and comic relief for the article “Rubies and Fire Balloons Ignite in Taung Gyi.”
