The Diamond Information Center’s 20th diamond design contests in Japan emphasized wearable jewelry for the married woman aged 35 and over. Of the 836 designs submitted from throughout Japan, 52 were winners.
The contest was divided into five categories: necklaces and pendants, bracelets and bangles, brooches and pins, pierced earrings and a combination of diamonds and colorful material. Each category was further broken down into two price ranges: items retailing between Y300,000 and Y599,000 (US$2,500 and $5,000) and items priced at Y1 million ($8,400) and above.
The judges for this year’s contest included: Jun Okina, a member of the Diamond International Academy; Toro Ohshimo, a winner in the 1988 Diamond International Awards; and Masaji Yamagishi, a winner in the 1992 Diamond International Awards. From each division, a top award was presented for the most outstanding creation. The top five of each division and the winner of the Best Craftsman Award are featured on these pages.
