Platinum Creator House established in 1988 by Platinum Guild International Tokyo as a clearinghouse for platinum jewelry designs, took a bold step beyond the conventional boundaries of jewelry by inviting craftsmen from a wide array of artistic disciplines, both from Japan and abroad, to pursue new patterns in platinum jewelry.
The resulting collection of 250 pieces, called “Platinum Design Exhibition by Creators of the World,” debuted at the International Jewelry Tokyo show in February. This fifth annual exhibit included an increased number of pieces from different countries.
This “Creator House ’93” division of the collection brought creators from a variety of fields together with jewelry designers to engage in discussion and exchange ideas. Masayuki Kurokawa (architect), Akihito Izukara (fiber artist) and Makoto Naruse (graphic designer) led a team of 15 jewelry designers. Working as a team on the theme “designs with a freer concept,” the directors and designers met frequently through all the stages of planning, drawing the sketches and actual production of the pieces during a nine-month period. In addition to the creations of the jewelry designers, pieces fashioned by the directions themselves were also exhibited.
Foreign artisans from other fields were also invited to contribute to the platinum jewelry collection, as were 11 students of the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry in Tokyo.
