TURN TO SWISS THOUGHTS (JewelSiam August/September 1990 p50)

While Europeans are acknowledged leaders in innovative jewelry design, Japanese works have become comparable in that field, says gold-smith and designer Ms. Majo Fruithof.

The realm of Japanese design has become at least as important and successful as any leader in today’s jewelry scene, “she said.

Her jewelry is wearable and for people who want to “underline heir personality,” without consideration to social security, she says. Price ranges are 150 U.S. dollars to 25,000 dollars.

A jewelry’s shape and color and material combinations must “talk for themselves,” said the 26-year-old designer, who set up her own jewelry store and studio in 1986, two years after completing her apprenticeship. Majo also is a member of “Gruppe (Group) Design” and exhibits widely in and around Switzerland.

“I pay specific attention to bringing forward the characteristics of any material, well known or not,” she said. Her favorite materials and stones for which she uses amply include jade, lapis lazuli, turquoise, coral, pearls, and some kinds of metal and wood.

“I’ve always been inspired by original ornaments and jewelry, for instance, things created by Africans of Indian tribes. I prefer their clear and basic shape and the generous use of materials and strong color contrasts which enhance the effect of the elements used,” she said.

The young designer, with good humor, has worldly advise for hopeful young designers: “Don’t give your energy to make another man rich!”
